Email Display Names Update
The IT team has updated your wing account to set the default mailing address to your alias email address and to automatically update your display name each day.
What does this mean?
Well, first we have to remember that each wing account has a primary address and an alias. That primary address is your CAPID and is what you use to login/authenticate with different services. Your alias was created when we made you account to be your first and last name. So if your CAPID was 123456 and your name was John Smith, then your primary address is email@example.com and your alias is John.Smith@miwg.cap.gov. Your primary address has to be unique in order not to conflict with other names. So we chose to make your CAPID your primary address but allowing the member to send/receive correspondence with a user friendly name (your alias).
The first change we made was to make your alias address your default mailing address in Gmail. So now when you go to the web client at mail.miwg.cap.gov and create a new email, it should default to your alias address which others will see and respond to.
The second change we made was to automatically update your display name to a convention that the Air Force uses. When you send an email, the receiver sees this display name in the From: field. The Air Force format for this name is "Last, First Rank Organization Unit". For Civil Air Patrol, this converts to "Last, First Rank CAP GLR-MI-XXX". So now when you promote or change units, that display name will automatically update within 24 hours.
