State Legislators Participate in Orientation Flights

July 10, 2022

In the first week of July, state representatives of Michigan participated in orientation flights with pilots of Michigan Wing.

Representative David Martin's flight was conducted on July 5th and his pilot was Major Steve Duquette (Bishop Airport Senior Sq).  "The flight was smooth as silk. I am impressed with the number of training missions conducted each year and the members willing to volunteer for them!", said Rep Martin of his experience.

Representative Donna Lasinski's flight was conducted on July 8th and her pilot was Col Leo Burke (MIWG HQ). “I am honored to have flown with Col Leo Burke over my home district of Scio Township. I truly loved seeing the place I represent and call home from this new perspective, especially being able to observe many of the issues I work on in Lansing, from the sky. Much of the work I do in Lansing deals with my district’s local issues on roads, infrastructure, agriculture and aggregate mining. I was able to see all of these from this view! We live in such a gorgeous state, and I am so appreciative of Colonel Burke for taking me on this flight and learning about the Civil Air Patrol Cadet program as well as about Civil Air Patrol and their initiatives in aerospace education as well as their diligent efforts in emergency situations. I am so thankful for this experience and to be able to live in and represent a district this beautiful and this Pure Michigan."

Maj Kyle Curtiss also had the honor of conducting an orientation flight for Representative Ann Bollin during that week.

In order to participate in an orientation flight, representatives must be members of the State Legislative Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol. Legislative (or DV) Orientation flights are conducted similarly to Cadet O-Flights and are used to give members of the state legislature a view of CAP's capabilities from the air, how we coordinate with members on the ground, and the different aerial missions we perform for our clients.  As part of this flight, the members are given the opportunity to take control of the plane for a period of the flight.
